Central London “after-dark” strategy: New late-night entertainment zones announced

Westminster City Council has introduced the “After Dark Strategy,” aiming to enhance Central London’s nightlife between 6pm and 6am.

The plan proposes the establishment of Late-Night Entertainment Zones in areas such as Oxford Street, The Strand, and Victoria Street. These zones are intended to host live music, theatre, and creative venues, strategically situated to minimize noise disturbances in residential neighbourhoods.

In response to concerns about public safety and anti-social behaviour, the strategy includes measures like installing an additional 100 CCTV cameras and improving street lighting.

A zero-tolerance approach to harassment is emphasised, with new licensed venues required to assess and mitigate risks to women’s safety. The council also plans to support culturally significant LGBTQ+ spaces to ensure they remain safe and inclusive.

To diversify night-time offerings, the strategy encourages non-alcohol-led activities such as extended retail hours and late-night museum openings.Venues are also prompted to host sensory-friendly events, including “quiet nights” with reduced noise levels and dimmed lighting, catering to neuro diverse individuals.

The strategy has been shaped by extensive public engagement, including feedback from residents, businesses, cultural institutions, and night-time workers.

The council is inviting further input from stakeholders to refine and strengthen the final strategy. The public consultation for the Westminster After Dark Strategy is open until June 22, 2025.
